Biography:
Stuart Roosa was an American astronaut, test pilot, and U.S. Air Force pilot best known for his role as the Command Module Pilot on the Apollo 14 mission. Born August 16, 1933, in Durango, Colorado, he graduated from Oklahoma State University with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering.
Roosa joined the Air Force and became a research test pilot before being selected as an astronaut in 1966. While Alan Shepard and Edgar Mitchell walked on the moon's surface during Apollo 14, Roosa remained in lunar orbit aboard the Command Module "Kitty Hawk", conducting experiments and taking photographs.
During the Apollo 14 mission, Roosa carried hundreds of tree seeds, which were later planted in various locations across the United States as "Moon Trees." After Apollo 14, he served as backup Command Module Pilot for Apollo 16 and Apollo 17.
Roosa retired from NASA and the Air Force in 1976, entering the business world. He passed away on December 12, 1994, due to complications from pancreatitis.
